New ‘Black and Blue’ single from shoegaze pioneers The Veldt, inspired by\u00a0Ice Burg Slim<\/strong><\/p>\n

Perhaps the only notable first-wave shoegaze bands to go on hiatus or ‘reform’ since the early 1990s, The Veldt is identical twins\u00a0Daniel Chavis\u00a0<\/strong>(vocals, guitar) and\u00a0Danny Chavis<\/strong>\u00a0(guitar), along with\u00a0Hayato Nakao\u00a0<\/strong>(bass),\u00a0Marvin Levi<\/strong>\u00a0(drums) and\u00a0Alex Cox<\/strong>\u00a0(guitar).<\/p>\n

\u2018Black and Blue<\/strong>\u2019 relays a tragic story, based on a book written by\u00a0Ice Burg Slim<\/strong>: \u201cMama Black Widow tells the tragic story of Otis Tilson, a stunning black drag queen trapped in a cruel queer ghetto underworld. In hopes of escaping the racial bigotry and economic injustice of the South, Otis\u2019 family journeys north from their plantation to an urban promised land. Once in Chicago Otis and his brother and sisters become prisoners to a wasteland of violence, crime, prostitution and rape. This is the gut-wrenching tale of the destruction of a family in purest form. This song is a homage to ice and his writing.\u201d<\/div>\n

This track is lifted off the new EP\u00a0‘Thanks to the Moth and Areanna Rose’<\/strong>, out now via\u00a0sonaBLAST! Records<\/strong>. The footage for the new video was captured by\u00a0Yuko Sueta<\/strong>, the late wife of Veldt guitarist Danny Chavis.<\/div>\n

The new EP features contributions from two 4AD music legends of the dreampop and shoegaze world (a remix by\u00a0A.R.Kane\u00a0<\/strong><\/a>and production by\u00a0Robin Guthrie<\/strong>\u00a0of\u00a0Cocteau Twins<\/strong>). The Bandcamp version of the EP also features two legends of the trip-hop and rap\/trap world (‘Dakini’<\/strong>\u00a0was remixed by\u00a0Jason Furlow<\/strong>, a.k.a.\u00a0Nosaj of New Kingdom<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Carlos Bess<\/strong>\u00a0of the\u00a0Wutang production team<\/strong>).\n<\/div>\n
The Veldt\u2019s sound has accommodated the influence of musical kin Cocteau Twins as readily as it did Marvin Gaye and free jazz warriors Sun Ra and Pharaoh Sanders. These trailblazers reference European post-punk while embracing modern hip-hop, and working with transient dreamscapes as fluidly as solid song structures.<\/div>\n

Pitchfork\u00a0<\/strong>included The Veldt\u00a0‘Afrodisiac’\u00a0<\/strong>in the top 50 shoegaze albums ever released and\u00a0Stereogum\u00a0<\/strong>included\u00a0\u2018Until You\u2019re Forever\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0in the top 31 shoegaze tracks. Their sound also inspired future generations of alternative artists, including\u00a0TV On the Radio<\/strong>.<\/div>\n

The Veldt’s journey is fascinating. Some time after forming in Raleigh, they met programmer Hayato Nakao in New York and have together forged music that is a heady and sensual blend of shoegaze and progressive soul, dreamy soundscapes and infectious grooves.<\/div>\n

After signing to Capitol Records in 1989, The Veldt were soon in the studio with dream-gaze guru Robin Guthrie working on their initial recordings, touring with\u00a0Cocteau Twins<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0The Jesus and Mary Chain<\/strong>, and recording\u00a0‘Marigolds’<\/strong>\u00a0with Lincoln Fong (Moose). They soon recorded their classic\u00a0\u2018Afrodisiac\u2019\u00a0<\/strong>(1994), produced by\u00a0Ray Shulman (The Sundays, Bjork, Sugarcubes)<\/strong>, which was released via Mercury Records.<\/div>\n

The Veldt has collaborated with\u00a0TV On The Radio, Mos Def, Lady Miss Kier (Deee-Lite)<\/strong>, and 4AD legend\u00a0A.R.Kane<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and shared the stage with\u00a0The Pixies, Throwing Muses, Echo & The Bunnymen, Cocteau Twins, Manic Street Preachers, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Oasis, Chuck D, Living Colour<\/strong>, and\u00a0Schooly D<\/strong>.<\/div>\n
