\nPylon Reenactment Society\u00a0<\/strong>will release their 6-song\u00a0‘Part Time Punks Session’<\/strong>\u00a0EP on\u00a0Chunklet Industries,<\/strong>\u00a0a hip Athens-based tastemaker record label founded by Henry Owings. Pylon Reenactment Society formed from the ashes of Pylon, one of the most influential bands at the outset of what became known as the \u2018Athens, GA music scene\u2019, along with other frontrunners The B-52\u2019s and R.E.M.<\/p>\n

Pylon Reenactment Society was founded in 2014, five years after Pylon\u2019s celebrated history came to a sudden end in 2009 with the death of guitarist Randy Bewley. It is fronted by Vanessa Briscoe (now Briscoe Hay), whose inimitable vocal textures and phrasing defined the band\u2019s sound for most listeners. Pylon was, and always will be comprised of\u00a0Hay, Bewley, Michael Lachowski<\/strong>, and\u00a0Curtis Crowe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The ‘Part Time Punks Session’ EP was recorded in December 2016 just hours before the band played the Part Time Punks series at Los Angeles\u2019 Echoplex. In the spirit of renowned DJ John Peel, Part Time Punks DJ and organizer\u00a0Michael Stock<\/strong>\u00a0invited the band to visit Josiah Mazzashi’s studio The Cave in order to record exclusive tracks for his\u00a0\u2018Part Time Punks\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0radio show, a show on\u00a0KXLU<\/strong>\u00a0that has earned a cult following since 2006.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was struck by the energy of the performances and the quality of the recording. It reminded me somewhat of Pylon’s recording of \u2018Gyrate\u2019. That record had also been done very quickly with the band playing together and a minimum of overdubs,\u201d says Pylon Reenactment Society front woman\u00a0Vanessa Briscoe Hay<\/strong>. \u201cThis way of recording can lend a dynamic live feeling if done properly and if you have a good performance. An elusive goal had been achieved and not really noticed for what it was: something really good.\u201d
\nIn Pylon\u2019s prime, they were every Athens band\u2019s favorite local band. Their musical na\u00efvet\u00e9, southern upbringing, art school smarts, and house-party roots exploded together to create something quite improbably amazing, simultaneously hitting the listener on a mental, physical, and spiritual level.
\nPylon Reenactment Society happened when Athens\u2019 artist Jason NeSmith, head of the music committee for the first annual Art Rocks Athens, was organizing an event exploring the 1975-1985 Athens art and music scene. \u00a0He asked Hay to perform a short set of Pylon songs. \u00a0Since NeSmith\u2019s band\u00a0Casper & The Cookies<\/strong>\u00a0had previously recorded and performed with Hay as\u00a0Supercluster<\/strong>, it was natural for them to back her at this event. \u00a0The response was very positive with the group then opening for\u00a0Fred Schneider (The B-52s),<\/strong>\u00a0touring with indie darlings\u00a0Dressy Bessy<\/strong>, and performing shows in conjunction with the release of the\u00a0\u2018Pylon Live\u2019\u00a0<\/strong>album.
\nWhat started as a one-off gig transpired into a tight touring unit. In addition to Hay and NeSmith, the band is rounded out with\u00a0Kay Stanton (Casper & The Cookies)<\/strong>\u00a0on bass guitar and backing vocals, pianist\u00a0Damon Denton (Big Atomic)\u00a0<\/strong>on keyboards and\u00a0Joe Rowe (The Glands)<\/strong>\u00a0on drums.<\/div>\n

\n‘Feast on My Heart’ is special given that this is the only song Hay has co-written with someone from outside the band.\u00a0Craig Woodall<\/strong>, member of Athens-based experimental band\u00a0Limbo District<\/strong>, and Hay chose a section at random from Shakespeare’s least popular work \u2018Titus Adronicus\u2019, and translated the words into modern slang. A special chemistry was unveiled, as they took turn, in suit, consecutively writing these lines.<\/div>\n

\n“Every song had a different approach to in the way it was created. We were artists before we were musicians and it affected the way we wrote, lived and performed. I wrote most of the lyrics for the band after the initial ones were composed by our bassist Michael Lachowski. Sometimes I co-wrote them with him,\u201d explains\u00a0Vanessa Briscoe Hay.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI wrote the lyrics to the song \u2018Crazy\u2019 when I was going through some sad times and I broadened the personal feelings to more universal feelings as a sort of therapy. I have had various people tell me it is their Pylon favorite song, or their coming out song, or it helped them through some hard emotional times. Very humbling to have that affect on others. If anyone has a question relating to the writing process, I’ll be happy to answer them. That said, I still have no idea where ideas come from, they just do.”<\/p>\n

\nThe\u00a0<\/strong>‘Part Time Punks Session’\u00a0<\/strong>EP will be released via\u00a0Chunklet Industries<\/strong>\u00a0with distribution by Revolver U.S.A. It is slated for digital release on October 6 and on 12\u201d vinyl, as a limited edition of 100 on color disc, on October 20. A limited number of cassettes will also be available at shows only.<\/div>\n
