Paul Haslinger reveals new video for ‘Valse I‘ from new album ‘Exit Ghost’ out now on Artificial Instinct. The composer’s long thought out opus, a moment caught in time, flicks through reference points, taking an ethereal excursion that permeates musical genres as it becomes awash with intricate sounds and cross-pollinating rhythms.

“The video for Valse I features CircusNext laureate Iona Kewney performing in the ruins of Tyneham Village in Hampshire. The village was abandoned during the second world war, and the inhabitants never returned home. Since then, it has been left to rot, and nature has taken over the previous human habitations. Paul Haslinger’s music is all about decay and transformation, so it seemed a perfect setting, while Iona’s dancing combines highbrow contemporary dance techniques with contortionism. The song itself is a looped and re-sampled reworking of the traditional Waltz structure, so the three seemed to work together perfectly, with the dancer appearing to be as much a part of the setting as the collapsing buildings and invading wildlife.” – Rob Curry, film director
“Valse I is a piece I’ve been working on for a long time. It was always this little odd piece that didn’t fit anywhere, until I started working on this album. I’ve always associated weird, dreamlike scenarios with this track, carousels in slow motion, altered circus and fairground imagery. And it reflects the fact that every so often, our life turns into this strange little circus. A montage sequence of dreams.” Paul Haslinger
Built originally from the warmth of his grand piano, the album resonates with purity and power, from an eerie and evocative betweenworld, that’s at once expansive and rolling, then intoxicating and suffocating in equal measures; modern composition at its most uplifting; cerebral, celebratory, intense and beautiful.
Created over the span of eight years and filled with literal and personal references, the album itself is a testament to the search – a quest filled with hints, particles and suggestions.
Paul Haslinger’s ‘Exit Ghost’ is the first release from new electronic labelArtificial Instinct and will be available on vinyl (with die cut sleeve) and CD.
“Alone at a grand piano Haslinger has a knack for evocative phrasing and suggestive cadences, while through understated arrangements, ambient undercurrents and electronic shading he manages to draw a range of dramatic implications out of his introspection.” The Wire
