Manwolves is a 5-piece multi-instrumental band whose genre-bending sound combines elements of rock, hip hop, and jazz. Originally from Evanston, IL, the group is composed of lifelong friends Jamie McNear (vocals), Eli Cohen (guitar), Henry Wolf(bass), Julian Freeman (drums), and Ari Garfin (keys), who have known each other since high school. The 5 friends initially bonded over their individual obsessions with music. Discovering that they also all played instruments, the friends decided to see what happened if they worked together. The result was electric and Manwolves were born…
The group is now based in Chicago and have steadily been building themselves a reputation as one of the most exciting, unique live acts in the city. With multiple sold out headline shows in venues such as Lincoln Hall, Chop Shop, & Subterranean, they’ve had the opportunity to play alongside other major up and coming acts such as Ric Wilson and open for acts such as Omar Apollo and Boy Pablo. The group has reached No.4 on Spotify’s coveted viral chart and have to date racked up over 20 million streams with their debut album ‘A Safety Meeting’, released in 2018.
The group are now back with their new album entitled ‘Sleeping In’, which is an eccentric musical journey from alternative rhythms, hip-hop inspired versus, rock riffs, and contemporary jazz elements. It redefines indie molding new sounds effortlessly incorporating Manwolves’ incendiary live sound, whilst thematically tackling the often troubling and unnatural relationship so many of us have with the internet and social media.
Featuring: Kota the Friend, Lil Halima, and Ruby LaPorta
The Sleeping In album concept was spun off from Manwolves 2019 single “Internet Child”, a story about who Jamie (vocals) was in the online world humanity had taken occupancy in. Manwolves wanted to capture the feel Jamie’s strange life and relationship with the internet had evolved to that others were not yet experiencing. Who Jamie was online versus who he was in the real world was symbiotic and inescapable.
During the writing process of Sleeping In, Manwolves was going through many personal changes, relationship problems, and experiencing their first time traveling the country on tours as a band. While everything was seemingly uncertain and constantly changing around then, one thing that remained consistent was being lost online.
Despite all this madness, sleep problems, and stress, Jamie remained self-aware, reflecting, deep diving, and expanding his interests and perceptions, seeing every day differently by refining elements of his identity online. Drawing inspiration from the online video games, comics, and music he intended to create an adventure blurring the lines of the two worlds, reality and online, encompassing what it was like to be an internet child.
“All I could do was dream so I decided to Sleep In”. – Jamie McNear (Vocals)
The writing and concepts of the album were all conceived prior to the pandemic. As the pandemic progressed Jamie noticed more people starting to go through what he was feeling and it became strangely comforting.
